Center for Strategic Defense Studies
On March 10, 2009, within the sphere of the South American Defense Council of the Union of South American Nations, the Ministers of Defense of UNASUR, approved the creation of the Center for Strategic Defense Studies, permanent instance of the CDS, whose mission is, among others, to “generate a strategic thinking at regional level that would contribute to the coordination and harmonization of Defense policies in South America”.
This institutional instance that belongs to the Defense Council was the first one with a permanent basis in UNASUR. It was formally stablished in the Republic of Argentina upon signing the Headquarters’ Agreement between the UNASUR and the Argentinean Government, located in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
As determined in its Statute, the mission of the Center for Strategic Defense Studies is to contribute to enhancing the principles and objectives that the South American nations established for Defense Council, including, among others, to consolidate South America as a zone of peace; to promote transparency and mutual trust; to build a South American identity and a shared view in defense matters; and to contribute to the articulation of joint positions in the region.
